Baxter's Boondoggle
Todd Baxter has resigned from the Legislature so that he can make money lobbying instead of serving through the upcoming special session on school finance. The special election to replace Baxter is going to cost the taxpayers of Travis County ~$375,000.
Why are we paying for this? Baxter was elected to serve a two-year term in the Legislature. He has choosen to resign rather than serve out his full term. He can make that choice, but why should the taxpayers foot the bill, particularly when it allows him to go out and earn money lobbying?

I would agree that Baxter should have served the term to which he was elected. Of course, with his lousy voting record and TRMPAC taint, Baxter was a in a position to lose in '06. I have been convinced that the GOP wants to get Bentzin in before the DeLay trial gets cranked up. They figuered that Baxter was going to come out looking bad from TRMPAC connections, and thus he was a lost cause. Furthermore, a quickie special election puts a guy like Bentzin (w/ millions of $$ in the bank) at an advantage to others who will have to go out and raise money.
It is my opinion that Bentzin is an ideologue of the same mold as Baxter, and beholden to the same special interests. So, if Bentzin wins, I doubt anything will be substantially different than if Baxter had been re-elected.
